Biennial promotes meeting with Samuel Fosso this Tuesday
Through photography and performance, the Cameroonian artist creates alternative identities that challenge conventional representational standards and gives autofiction and self-portraiture dimensions that are both political and historical, fictional and intimate. Departing from the photographic series "70s Lifestyle" and "Fosso Fashion" presented at the Biennial, Fosso discusses his artistic career in this conversation with Adriana Ferreira Silva, journalist, writer and curator, and with Thyago Nogueira, curator, director of the IMS Contemporary Photography Department and editor-in-chief of ZUM magazine.

ADRIANA FERREIRA SILVA is a journalist, writer and curator. She is currently a columnist for Nexo Jornal; literature curator for Numéro Brasil magazine; and a contributor to Quatro Cinco Um magazine. In her 25-year career, she has been a correspondent in Paris and worked for Marie Claire, Vogue Brasil, Veja São Paulo, Folha de S.Paulo, among others. She is co-founder of Grená - Agência de Criação and Head of Content at Galápagos Newsmaking.
THYAGO NOGUEIRA is a curator, director of the Contemporary Photography Department at the Moreira Salles Institute (IMS) and editor-in-chief of ZUM magazine. He recently curated the exhibitions “Claudia Andujar: a luta Yanomami” (Amparo Museum, Mexico, 2023; IMS, Brazil, 2018-2019), “Miguel Rio Branco: palavras cruzadas, sonhadas, rasgadas, roubadas, usadas, sangradas” (IMS, 2022-2023) and “Daido Moriyama: uma retrospectiva” (IMS, 2022). He co-organized the book "Behind that photo", with Lilia Schwarcz
SAMUEL FOSSO is a photographer and visual artist. He works with photography and performance, through which he creates alternative identities that challenge conventional representational standards. Throughout his career, he gave self-fiction and self-portrait a dimension that was simultaneously political and historical, fictional and intimate. Incorporating important historical figures and social archetypes became for him not only a way of existing in the world, but also a clear demonstration of the power of photography in building myths, and a way of questioning what is at stake in the codes of representation and identity. He has recently held solo shows at the Princeton University Art Museum, USA (2022); Museum der Moderne, Salzburg, Germany (2022); and Maison européeenne de la photographie, Paris, France (2022). He lives between Bangui and Paris.
