Resist the past, ignore the future, and the inability to hold the present
Vijai Patchineelam’s exhibition-installation Resistir ao passado, ignorar o futuro e a incapacidade de conter o presente (Resist the past, ignore the future, and the inability to hold the present) is slated to open on January 15, from 7pm to 10pm at Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro. The show establishes connections between Patchineelam’s eponymous video and three pieces from Carlos Zílio’s Equilíbrio (1976) series, and will remain open until March 1st.
How can art be political and open up new vistas? While in Sweden, Patchineelam filmed local activists in demonstrations and protests. By revisiting Zílio’s works, which are in the museum’s collection and were created at a time when his work took on a dimension of broad social critique, not only does Patchineelam pay him a tribute, he also proposes “a continuous dialog at different times on the same old issues,” as curators Luiz Camillo Osório and Marta Mestre put it.
Vijai Patchineelam (Niterói, Brazil, 1983) lives and works out of Niterói. The notions of process and accidentality punctuate his actions, installations, photographs and prints. The holder of a master’s degree in visual arts, he has exhibited solo in Cut Corner (2013) and A Pair of Lungs – A Lack of Faith (2010), both at the Seven Art Limited (New Delhi, India), and in group exhibitions such as Unfinished Analogies (Konsthall C, Stockholm, Sweden, 2011), Convivências (Fundação Iberê Camargo, Porto Alegre, Brazil, 2011), and Latidos Urbanos (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Santiago, Chile, 2011). He was shortlisted for the Rumos Itaú Cultural program (2011/2013) and won the Latin Union prize at the 5th International Art Biennial SIART, in La Paz (2007). In 2013, he was one of the artists selected for the 18th International Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil with The Story of Has-Been (2012), a four-volume photonovel formatted as an artist’s book.
