Activation space of the exhibition “Unerasable Memories – a historic look at the videobrasil collection” to host Public Programs opening with a meeting between a curator, a critic and artists

The KNOWLEDGE ZONE is home to different activation strategies for the show Unerasable Memories – a historic look at the videobrasil collection. Set within the Sesc Pompeia Warehouse, next to the exhibition venue, the area will host Educational Actions and the Public Programs meetings – activities designed to connect history, memory and art production, in a bid to enhance the experience of the artwork, the curating concept, and the Videobrasil Collection. The space will be inaugurated at 4pm on August 31, on which date the show will open for visiting with the first Public Programs meeting. At the meeting, curator Agustín Pérez Rubio will convene with artists Jonathas de Andrade, Sebastian Diaz Morales, Aurélio Michiles and critic Octavio Zaya to discuss “How to fight historical amnesia through art? Responsibility and artistic commitment.”

The debate will feature audience participation and focus on how the works of these three artists relate to historical memory and its political and social aspects. Exhibition curator and art critic Octavio Zaya will speak with the authors of the pieces Projeto Pacífico (Andrade), Lucharemos Hasta Anular la Ley (Diaz Morales) and O Sangue Da Terra (Michiles). In addition to discussing issues arising from their projects, they will touch on the combining of documentary and video art, which gives rise to hybrid reality-fiction pieces; and the ways in which historical research influences art creation and curating practices.

A total of three panels have been conceived by curator Agustín Pérez Rubio as part of the exhibition’s Public Programs. The second meeting takes place on October 21, 8pm, featuring Solange Farkas, director and curator general of Videobrasil, and researcher Eduardo de Jesus as they discuss the “Videobrasil Collection: activation strategies,” in a debate mediated by art critic Fabio Cypriano. The "Unerasable Memories" exhibition book will be launched on this occasion. Much more than a catalog, the publication is a critical piece, providing views on each of the featured pieces from 18 guest curators and researchers, among them Octavio Zaya, plus an interview granted by Solange Farkas to Fabio Cypriano.

The final Public Programs meeting takes place one day prior to the exhibition’s closing, on November 29, 4pm, once again featuring the curator Agustín Pérez Rubio. On this occasion, the artists Rosângela Rennó, Ayrson Heráclito and Vincent Carelli will convene to discuss “The Renegade Histories: Indian and African memories.” This same day will see the debut of Heráclito’s performance “Ritual na Rota do Atlântico Negro” (2014), the outcome of a residency he will undertake at Dakar’s Raw Material in September and October this year. Heráclito was one of the residency prize-winners at the 18th Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil, in 2013.

In addition to attending the Public Programs activities, the audience will have access to computers for viewing exclusive contents in the KNOWLEDGE ZONE. Contents include the Video Library, featuring 1,300-plus videos from the Videobrasil Collection, among them pieces shortlisted for Festivals, performance recordings, documentaries etc. The computers will also allow access to PLATFORM:VB, an online research and curating tool containing interviews and statements from artists regarding their artwork; and Channel VB, featuring statements and audio visual recordings that form the memory of Videobrasil.

The Educational Actions set to take place at the space have been tailored around the exhibition by the Zebra5 Jogo e Arte collective, targeting children, families and the general public. The activities will involve board games and small interactive installations encouraging the audience to delve into the show’s universe, as well as short workshops on film editing, stop motion animation and other experiences. Workshops will take place on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, at 12 noon, 3pm and 5pm, and registration will be available onsite, half an hour prior to the beginning of the event. Scheduled guided tours are also available, including for groups, during the exhibition’s visiting hours (Tuesdays to Saturdays from 9am to 10pm and Sundays and holidays from 9am to 8pm). To schedule a visit, call (+55 11) 3871-7780 or send an email to agendamento@pompeia.sescsp.org.br.
