In Residence
Virgínia de Medeiros is participating in the 2014 season of the Videobrasil Residency Program. The Brazilian artist has won the ICCo Residency Prize, at New York’s Residency Unlimited, during the 18th edition of the Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil, for her piece Sérgio e Simone.
She has been in New York for fifteen days only, but her immersion in the city has already begun. “The act of losing myself makes me desperate and since I don’t speak English, this shortcoming brings me to a state of near-physical disability, because speech and the body walk hand in hand. This state makes me ponder about all human limitations: physical, social, moral,” says Virgínia in one of her posts on the blog inresidence.videobrasil.org.br.
The artist reflects on issues relating to her production, her creative process and new projects as they begin to take shape at the American center. You can follow Virgínia’s experiences in real time on this Videobrasil channel.
The 2014 residency season of the 18th Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil continues. Aside from Virgínia, eight other artists have won two-month residencies at Videobrasil Residency Network partner organizations throughout the world. Ayrson Heráclito and Gabriel Mascaro (Brazil), Bakary Diallo (Mali), Basir Mahmood (Pakistan), Laura Huertas Millán (Colombia), LucFosther Diop (Cameroon), Nurit Sharett (Israel) and Ali Cherri (Lebanon) will undergo experiences in exchange and displacement at 12 institutions in five different countries (Brazil, USA, China, Poland, Mexico and Senegal).
