30 Years of Videobrasil show is presented in Poland
Today and tomorrow, Polish audiences will be introduced to the particularities of video made in Brazil, and its connections with the three decades of existence of Associação Cultural Videobrasil, the pioneer in publicizing the medium in the country. Three programs from the 30 Years of Videobrasil show, comprising 18 videos, will be presented at the Kino.LAB, a projection venue of the Centre for Contemporary Art Zamek Ujazdowski. Divided into three historical moments, the show features work by leading names in Brazilian video history, such as Fernando Meirelles, Walter Silveira, Tadeu Jungle, Cao Hamburger, Lucas Bambozzi, Wagner Morales. Marcellvs L. and Tatiana Blass.
The videos have been divided into three curatorial sections. The 80’s Experimental Practices (1983 to 1989) comprises the birth of the Festival and its early editions, marked by the diffusion and stabilization of the electronic medium. The second moment is The 90’S: Into the Art - Video Production Betwween Movies and Visual Art (1990 to 1998), a time when electronic art had already become consolidated on the national scene, and Brazilian artists gained international renown. Finally, 21th Century: The Consolidation Of a Language (from 2001 onwards), during which the festival’s intersections with the art system became more and more intense until, in 2011, the event embraced the myriad expressions of contemporary art.
The show will also include Un Cercle autour du soleil, by Lebanon’s Ali Cherri, winner of the Res Artis Residency Prize during the 18th edition of the Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil (2013). Since April 10, Cherri has been developing his creative process at the A-I-R Laboratory (Artists In Residency Laboratory), one of the partners of the 2014 Videobrasil Residency Program. Both Kino.LAB and the A.I.R (Artists in Residence) are a part of the Centre for Contemporary Art Zamek Ujazdowski, an organization whose mission is to foster contemporary research and artistic expression.
Associação Videobrasil’s programming director Thereza Farkas is in Poland and will attend the show’s opening today. She will also meet with Cherri and with representatives of the A.I.R. Laboratory – which is a part of the 2014 Videobrasil Residency Program. Via actions of this sort, Videobrasil reinforces its strategy of fostering and publicizing contemporary art, activating its collection and establishing closer ties with partners. Both the A.I.R Laboratory and the Kino.Lab are part of the Centre for Contemporary Art Zamek Ujazdowski, which fosters contemporary research and artistic expression.
