Lebanon’s Mahmoud Hojeij uses fiction in a documentary-like tone to address female sexuality and male oppression Shameless Transmission of Desired Transformations Per Day. The piece won a prize at the competitive show of the 13th Videobrasil (2001), and was rerun in the 14th edition, in 2003, as part of the show Possible Narratives – Artistic Practices in Lebanon, curated by Akram Zaatari and Christine Tome. Shameless Transmission... tells the story of three single Lebanese women, all of whom were subpoenaed to reveal alleged intimate acts to authorities at Lebanese checkpoints.
Mahmoud makes fiction films and documentaries, and holds a PhD in Media and Communications from the European Graduate School, in Saas-Fee, Switzerland, and a master’s in Media Studies from the New School University in New York, USA. In 2012, his Impossible Exchange was shortlisted for the Berlinale Shorts competitive show in Berlin, Germany (2012). Stable Unstable is his new work. He lives and works out of Beirut, Lebanon.
