The video takes a poetic approach to nightfall in a forest in the Lebanese mountains. There is a spatial unity here (forest in the mountains), though the woods, as the country’s traditional oral fairytales show, are a place to get lost in, a metaphor for the unconscious. Even so, the mist and the rows of trees underscore the absolute lack of spatial references. When the characters, a supporting cast to the forest itself, appear on the scene in their blue van, it’s surprising, because there are no roads leading to the place. It is then that the suspense kicks in: what’s going to happen now? The time of the action is diluted into a long wait that flits along a spectrum of sensations running from fear and unease to curiosity and impatience. Osta moves deftly within these genre parameters, throwing up clues that, as in the very best thrillers or mysteries, always point towards something out of scene.
