Shot in 2021 in the days after an unprecedented volcanic eruption, Mulika is an invitation into a pyroclastic landscape in the Congolese city of Goma. An extraterrestrial being, an afronaut, crash lands his spacecraft on the side of Mount Nyiragongo, beneath the crater of the world’s largest lava lake. The afronaut wanders down into the city contemplating on his own origins, lost to a long legacy of environmental exploitation and a medley of climate crimes. A testament and a lamentation, the film is a reflection on a past long gone, as well as a cry of despair for a future condition. We are called to reflect on the impact of mineral extraction in exploited contexts like Congo and the mineral extraction complex that simultaneously drives technological advancement and war.
