The subject of Tomo is the civil war that has been simmering in Mali since 2012. The film is a condemnation of senseless violence that destroys and distorts the social body. The title means “scorched earth” in the language of the Bambara people (one of the main ethnic groups in Mali). The viewer looks through the eyes of the frightened protagonist, who is breathless from shock and trying to cope with disorientation in space. We see a village that is deserted only at first glance: in fact, it is inhabited by fiery ghosts pursuing their daily routines. Their measured movements contrast with their flaming silhouettes: this is true eschatological horror.
