Artist active in video and video installation. Aravena started working in the 1990s and her work often deals with questions such as identity, displacements, and memory through a unique perspective, as she seemingly cuts out images and moves them to new subjective contexts. In doing so, she creates an intense dialogue between her experiences, the images she produces, and the contemporary political and social issues. In 2003, drawing on her Palestinian family background, she created the Palestine Project, a series focusing on the representations of borders and the imagery they engender. From 1987 until 1992, Claudia Aravena studied graphic design at Universidad Arcis and audiovisual communication at Instituto Arcos, both in Santiago, Chile. Her debut video, Miradas Desviadas (1992), won a prize from the Research Commission of the Unesco’s International council for Film, Television and Audiovisual Communication in 1993. In 1998, she won the Grand Prize at the Locarno VideoArt Festival, in Switzerland, for her video First Steps (1998). She has partnered on several occasions with the Chilean artist Guillermo Cifuentes, a key interlocutor throughout her career. Claudia Aravena teaches at Universidad Diego Portales and at Universidad de Chile. Lives and works in Santiago.
