A filmmaker, Barbieri creates documentaries, fictional works, television shows, and educational audio-visual products. He was one of the founders of Olhar Eletrônico, where he directed the award-winning short films Do Outro Lado da sua Casa (1985), Duvideo (1987) and Expiação (1989). He has directed TV shows aired nationwide, highlighting the daily newscast Jornal de Vanguarda, on Bandeirantes TV Network; weekly shows Vitrine and Forum, on TV Cultura; and special reports for newscasts on TV Globo and TV Educativa. In 1992, he founded the company Videografia, where he further explored documentary production, highlighting A Invenção de Brasília (2001), Atlântico Negro: Na rota dos orixás (1998), and Moçambique (1996). He has also shot biopics of people such as writer Monteiro Lobato and cartoonist Mauricio de Sousa. Barbieri’s fiction debut was the feature film As Vidas de Maria (2005). He has won over 30 national and international prizes, including: Best Film and Best Direction at Catarina Festival de Documentários, Santa Catarina, 2003; Prix Jeunesse International, Paris, 2001 and the Pierre Verger de Excelência from the Associação Brasileira de Antropologia, 2000. He holds a degree in Psychology and a Master’s in Communication and Semiotics from Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo.
